breathe, arrive
and belong

Tecer is a creative space where ideas, people and purpose come together — guided by rigour, empathy and craft.

01Who we are

Tecer Creative is the design practice at the heart of Tecer Co — shaped by a personal, considered way of working.

Rooted in workplace, education, healthcare, hospitality and residential design, Tecer carries forward a depth of practice from corporate, tertiary and healthcare projects — now expressed through a smaller, more personal studio.

Seasoned expertise across sectors, without the overhead of a large firm. And direct access to that thinking throughout.

Every space begins with understanding how people move, gather and belong.

02Experience

Built on more than twenty years designing the spaces where people work, gather, learn, heal and stay.

Tecer Creative is a progressive interior architecture and spatial strategy practice founded by Smitha Suraj, with over two decades of experience leading large-scale projects across Australia and internationally.

That experience spans some of the largest design and fitout projects in the country — from major corporate headquarters and multinational campuses through to children's hospitals, university health precincts, student accommodation, learning environments and hospitality spaces designed around how people actually move through and experience them.

What ties it all together is strategy. Understanding how an organisation or space actually operates, who the people in it are, and what they genuinely need — before any design begins. That process runs end to end: early conversations and stakeholder engagement, needs analysis, clear direction, documentation and delivery — often alongside building and mentoring the teams doing the work.

Tecer Creative carries that breadth forward, now at a more personal scale

03The name
Tecer.
/ teˈser /
verb — to weave, to narrate, to construct

Tecer is rooted in the idea of weaving — the act of interlacing threads into something whole. It captures what this practice does: bringing together people, ideas, materials and craft into spaces that hold them well.

04Purpose & vision
Purpose

To design spaces — and ways of working — that help people breathe, arrive and belong.

Vision

A practice known for thinking deeply before designing — one that brings rigour, empathy and craft to every project, and grows into a small family of businesses all rooted in the same philosophy of wellbeing and considered design.

05What we hold to

Four ideas sit underneath everything Tecer does — a checklist as much as a philosophy.

01

Wellbeing

Spaces should support how people feel, not just how they function. Comfort, light and calm are never "nice to haves" — they’re the point.

02

Radical Inclusion

Design that works for everyone who uses a space. Different bodies, needs and ways of moving through the world — whether working, learning, receiving care or gathering — considered from the outset, not added on after.

03

Strategic Intelligence

Design without strategy is guesswork. We take time to understand the brief, the organisation, the budget and the people — whatever the sector, whatever the scale — before a single line is drawn.

04

Considered Craft

Every detail matters, but nothing is fussy. Materials and layouts are chosen with intention — work that feels made, not assembled.

06The family

One practice, a growing family.

Every part shares one thread — the idea of weaving things together with care. Creative is the first chapter; Strategy grows alongside it.
